Longer Passwords Are More Secure

These days, most of our important information is stored online. Bank accounts, e-mail, credit card information and social networking afford us convenience, connection and communication, but they also give potential attackers the ability to access all of the same information. One of the best defenses is a super strong password.

Business Insider just published a video with some great information about how to easily and exponentially increase the security of your password.

As the video points out, one of the best ways to increase the security of your password is just to make it longer. The comic referenced in the video comes from XKCD, and it’s surprisingly helpful when it comes to remembering how to make your password more secure.

It’s going to be a long time before we forget “correcthorsebatterystaple,” which is proof that you’re probably not going to forget your password anytime soon. Even if the computer trying to crack your password is performing 4 billion calculations per second, it’s going to take about a quintillion years to crack your password. That’s pretty secure.

Having a quintillion years of security against automated password crackers, especially when you’re actually making your password easier to remember, is a great first step, but it’s not the only step you should be taking to protect yourself online. Stay tuned to the blog later this week because we’re going to run through a whole list of other things you should be doing when it comes to password security.
